Shimano 9/10/11sp compatibility

Post by Raph »

My son's just trashed a rim, it's only a few quid extra to replace the wheel rather than rebuild... but the nearest version I can find says 10/11sp.

It's the first time in years I've had to think about this stuff so I've kinda forgotten what's compatible with what - will a 9sp cassette go on a 10/11sp Shimano freehub?

Original wheel is R500, can't find exact replacement so looking at RS010 or RS11.

Yes. But I can't remember if it's 9-speed that needs a spacer or the 10/11-speed.

shimano 11s freehub body needs a 1.85mm spacer to work with a 10s cassette. It usually doesn't hurt to have the same spacer in with a 9s cassette too, but you can get away with a ~1mm one if you want to make the most of the possible dish adjustment. IIRC things are slightly different depending on whether you have an 11, 12 or 13T top cog, and who made the cassette.

cheers

Ok brilliant, thanks people! As long as the cassette slides onto the same splines I can deal with spacing issues.
