Extra long tourer chain
Hello,
I’m anticipating the need for a new chain on my Genesis Tour de Fer.
The current chain (10 speed) has 118 links but I can’t find chains of this length for sale at my usual outlets.
Where could I find a suitable replacement?
I assume tourers have longer chainstays to give pannier clearance?
Many thanks
Ian

Re: Extra long tourer chain
I would do a check to see what length of chain your bike actually needs.
There is a fair chance that the 118 link chain presently fitted is longer than needed.
If the 114 link chain that most are sold as can go around your largest chainring and largest rear sprocket at the same time (with or without the rear derailleur) then I would just use that length.
As it is a ten speed (not to be joined with ordinary links using a chain tool) then you cant just buy a donor chain and take 4 links every time you fit a new chain.

KMC lists 114 & 116 link chains in some of the varieties - but I would agree as suggested to check what the chain length should be - a couple of Genesis (can't remember model) I've had in the shop recently have been 112 links (with quite big cassettes)

Yes here is a 10 speed KMC with 116 links.

The SRAMs which I use are only 114 links.

Tandem shops have long chains.

You can, you just need an extra quick link. That's what I generally do with the timing chain on the tandem.

Re: Extra long tourer chain
It is worth it for the thirty or so links on the tandem but not for just a few like this.
Though why are you using a 10 speed chain as a primary on the tandem?
I did learn that I needed a 9 speed on mine because it was a straight through type and a single speed caught the final drive chain in bottom gear.

I'm not using a 10 speed chain (it is probably 9 speed, I can't remember) - it was just an example of using 2 quicklinks to add some extra (matched) chain to make up the length.

Re: Extra long tourer chain
some manufacturers list ~130 link e-bike chains (even longer chainstays...). You pay more per link than with standard length chains, IIRC.

Re: Extra long tourer chain
Sram used to supply chain on a reel for shops to cut to the required size!
Generally tourers don't need longer chains than standard, even just a compact chainset will reduce the length required and fit a full on touring set up and despite the potentially bigger sprockets they still use standard chains.
Just a thought, what chains do they use on these daft 1x ATB's?

Convention? what's that then?

I put a KMC ebike chain on one of my moultons that otherwise would need 2 bits of chains to be joined to get enough length. Must be the big ring and relatively long chainstays.
Re: Extra long tourer chain
Do you really need this long chain.
On tourer/CTC bike, chainset from faraway days when I went further and faster, is 52/40/26!!
Cassette is 11/28.
Rear Mech. is long cage ULTEGRA.RD.6600 from 1998.
It all works well.
I SHORTEN CHAINS by 6 links/3""!!
I am assuming you ride "triple" and while touring spend life in middle ring, dropping on to "granny ring" as needed.
Will you ever have occasion to need inefficient "big 'ring/biggest sprockets combinations?
Try a new 112 link chain; if you can't get two biggest sprockets with big "ring" it doesn't matter.
Job done!!

Re: Extra long tourer chain
Lazily, on my tourer (Thorn Club Tour)I just buy a standard chain and put it on as it is, check it does what it is meant to and that's it. They usually have at least a couple of links more than necessary, but unless the rear mech is in danger of folding down on itself I don't shorten the chain. I very much doubt a Tour de Fer would need a longer than normal chain.

Try this, I have always found it to be "in the parish"!

If you have a chain so short that you cannot select the big-big combination, this is an excellent recipe for a very broken bicycle.
Having said that it is quite possible that your 118 link chain is longer than it needs to be; however judging this with the existing chain is likely to be misleading; the existing chain is likely to be worn and could now be significantly longer than it was when it was new. Thus a worn chain might work at (say) 116 links but that doesn't mean that a new chain would.
