Bottom bracket which way to turn ?
Bottom bracket which way to turn ?
Hi which way do I turn this bottom bracket I’m having trouble it’s stuck I have been turning clock wise , I have made new groves with a angel grinder as I had worn the bracket trying clockwise cheers
Re: Bottom bracket which way to turn ?
Unscrew clockwise on an English BB, but anti-clockwise on and Italian BB.
If you're sure it's English and it won't shift clockwise, try and get the frame into a bench vice gripping the BB cup and turning the frame clockwise. That works. Been there, done it.

Re: Bottom bracket which way to turn ?
I had to use a monkey wrench and a 3' scaffold tube to get one off once. It was a bigger o/d than the bb shell, fortunately. Now when my LBS offers to fit the new BB, I decline and use normal torque
Re: Bottom bracket which way to turn ?
if you cannot get a good grip on the cup, a method that works well is to weld a long bar to the cup. The heat from welding breaks the bonds of corrosion and you can swing like a chimp on the bar. If it breaks off, no problem, just weld it back on again and have another go.
I'm guessing you don't have access to a welding set? Just take the frame and a suitable bar of some kind to any half-decent car repair workshop (some bicycle repair shops have welders too) and chat them up; they will probably weld it on for beer money and may (be sure that you know it is a RH or left hand thread first...) help you get it off, whilst it is still hot which gives you the best chance.
Be aware that with a seized BB cup in an aluminium frame there is always a chance that a seized BB will come out (with enough brute force etc), but the BB threads will be torn out of the frame in the process. There are various repair strategies that can then be used to recover the situation.

Yeah thanks for the help guys . All those you tube videos are clockwise turn. I might try the Bolt and washer trick to stop the tool from slipping

Have you lubed it up with penetrating lubricant or wd40/gt85?
Ia the frame aluminium? Have you tried heating the BB shell, even a hairdryer can help.

Yeah aye
Ia the frame aluminium?
Na .
Have you tried heating the BB shell,
yeah
I will try more heat. I’m starting to think it’s anti clock wise lol. I have ordered the long bolt and large nuts To stop the tool from slipping. Cheers.

presumably you have the cup that came out of the LH side? If you can identify the thread on that, it will tell you what the thread (and the handedness) on the other side will be.
cheers

Scroll down a bit on how to the nut/bolt & washers method.

blowlamp and WD40 required methinks.
I got one off years ago using a massive bolt clamping the bracket shell so I could use a socket.

Although I've broken two good bench vices doing that, over the years.

hence the suggested welding route; less chance of collateral damage of that sort...

Yes I do have that lh side. So I can tell from that which way it is threaded ?
