Long reach handlebars

Post by brucelee »

Just about to do my bar tape and brake cables and I'm looking to replace my (drop) handlebars with wider (46cm), non-ergo bars but cannot find any with a long enough reach. Mine appear to be about 120mm but nothing is available with anything like that. I'm trying to get a very long flat bit at the side of the bars. Using tektro levers. Anyone got any pointers ?

Cheers,
Bruce.

All the distributors in the UK seem to be boutique bike builders.

What's wrong with that?
If you don't want to follow fashion then you have to look outside the mainstream.

Nitto B135AA randonneur handlebars have 105mm forward reach, measured centre to centre.

However it isn't 100% clear to me that all handlebar manufacturers measure the forward reach in the same way; for example this is a side view of a VO 'course' handlebar

Image

which UK importers freshtripe say has ~125mm drop and ~115mm forward reach ("measured from the stem clamp forwards"). Looking at the photo, if the drop is 125mm C-C then the forward reach is close to 105mm C-C

cheers

I can confirm that no matter how you measure, the reach of the VO bars is longer than Nitto 132, 135, 177 and 115s, in fact I’ve not found any (current) bars that are equal in length let alone longer.

I've a pair of VO randonneur bars, chosen for their long reach; they do indeed have long ramps. I got mine from Practical Cycles' eBay shop, and have been happy with them - I'll probably replace them with another pair when the time comes.

Looking for something that will take a 31.8 clamp really, or I'm guessing I'll end up spending a load on stems...

FWIW I was in my LBS today where they have some VO handlebars so I brandished a tape measure at them. The forward reach is about 120 to 125mm (C to C) depending on the model of handlebar. I doubt there are any longer than that around.

You can fit a 26.0 bar to a 31.8mm clamp with a shim.

Long and 31.8? How much are you willing to pay?

They do have 15% off at the moment with delay15. I've had the randonneur bars by them and they are nicely finish and very light.
