Touring Wheels Advice

Post by jonwboy »

Looking to replace a rear wheel. Thinking 36 spokes. What would you recommend for hubs and rims?
The wheel would be used for heavy duty touring with panniers.
Weight of rider is 100kg.
135mm OLN

Thanks in advance.

In order to recommend a hub you would need to know your wheel spacing. 135,130 or even 125(ish) mm. And whether you have rim or disc brakes.

See link below or what hub do you currently have?

A lot of it is also how good the wheel builder is. You could do worse than Spa Cycles.

As to 36 spokes, yes.

At 100kg I've used a Sputnik rear wheel from Spa Cycles for fully loaded touring. No issues at all over thousands of miles.

Do I recall correctly from Shimano threads that in many ways a Deore hub would be a better choice than an XT?

Yes I remember that. Deore LX, as the axle is steel?

I know. I switched the spec of my Hewitt to LX from XT because of that advice.

Maybe the starting point might be what wheels you have now, why they're in need of replacement and if you haven't been happy with them, why not?

Not all Deore XT hubs have the aluminium axles, if you can get the older 756 hubs they have the higher XT quality with steel axles like the LX hubs.
Spa sell both types of XT hubs (at the same price), so I imagine you can choose which they fit.

No, neither did I.

Good tip as well.

May make use of.

I can also recommend Spa built 36 spoke Sputniks for touring use.

On the subject of XT/LX hubs can anyone offer advice on any other differences?

Is it true that the XT hubs have better sealing?

If so, and you can spec an XT hub with a steel axle, that may be the best option?

I have both LX and XT756 hubs.

The XT is a thing of exquisite quality, it just oozes it. Very smooth bearings, twice as many ratchets which just purr in the freehub, almost silently.
The LX is not so refined but there is no reason to suppose that it will not do the actual job just as well as the XT does.
I say that despite the fact that I managed to snap the freehub on one of my LX hubs within 5,000 miles.

For disk brakes: My LX hubs are centrelock compared to the XT being 6 bolt.

XT FH-756A has sixteen clicks in the freehub body. I always thought XT FH-756 was the same ( I can check later). Sixteen clicks is standard for shimano freehubs. The 'more clicks' thing applies to later models of XT hub only, I think.

cheers

I meant twice as many ratchets as the LX freehub.
If I am wrong on the number it is still the case that it is a much smoother freehub with a much better take up of the drive.
