I am considering converting one of my bikes to electric assist -I've had a bit of a health issue. It seems the only way to get a sensor that will respond to my pedal pressure in the conversion is to swap my bottom bracket for a square taper. I can find a zillion articles on why and how to go from square taper to hollowtech but none on vice versa. Any tips and wrinkles? Is it even possible? The bike I'm thinking of converting is a Dawes Super Galaxy 2008. I expect I'll have to swap out the chainwheels too... should I expect to find the equivalent triple easily on a square taper? TIA for any advice

ps the masterplan is to eventually get fit enough to take it off again!

Get on the phone to Spa Cycles. They sell all the stuff you need, at various price points, and they have sold Galaxies in the not too distant past. It can be done and should be fairly simple.

tip; check what lengths of BB spindle you can get with the sensors in, and then buy the crankset to suit.

Can't see why this is so difficult but you will need a square taper - have a word with Spa as suggested.

Also need to consider what type of kit you're going to get at the same time. I got one from Electric Bike Conversions (front hub) which at first came with a sensor on the chainwheel side and caused some alignment issues. In the end they also had a neat sensor that cable ties onto the bottom of the seat tube + just need 4mm to 5mm gap between the crank arm and the bottom bracket to accommodate the disc that activates the sensor. Suggest have a word with them too or whoever you're thinking of using before proceeding.

Thanks for those replies all. Thanks groberts too for the 'game changer' comment. Use of my wife's e-bike has certainly got me going again in a way it might have been difficult to imagine otherwise. But it's not a solution for me in the longer term - a bit like a big Dutch sofa bolted to an electric motor. Sh! Don't tell her.
