Any road up, this thread is about KMC Missing Links, and they open and close easily if you have the knack. If it's stiff to open, use the chainwheel method. Simple. I've done 9sp and 10sp. Never had 11sp yet.

It works for Wippermann links too. Not tried any Sram links though.

Both SRAM and KMC make two sorts of QL

- reusable

and

-non reusable

Needless to say they do not open with similar ease! Hence broad-brush comments about them being easy or not to open should be taken with a pinch of salt; in addition to this links vary because of how dirty/worn they are too.

cheers

Agree, but most are.
Personally, I wouldn't buy one that wasn't reusable.

Thanks for that link [no pun intended], Mick :) I've got a couple of spare KMC links but didn't know if they were the re-usable ones or not - seems that they are :D

IIRC the reusable KMC ones simply have an 'R' suffix in the part number writ upon them.

Just use Wipperman quick links. You don't need a special tool and the quick link is more reliable than KMC links, which are known to break.

I bought one of these as part of a group-buy, possibly a year ago? I think this was before "proper" retail UK distribution. Can't remember the price.

I have often struggled with opening dirty QLs (quick-links) out on the road, despite knowing the chainring "trick". So as these take negligible more space/weight than my regular levers they seemed worth carrying. [I use mainly 8-sp, but generally the "friends'" chains whose oil ends up all over my hands are 10-sp or higher ... ]

Never had a problem with closure.

I have since lost them. Never got to use them on the road :(
