Preparing chrome for paint

Post by David9694 »

My next resto’ project is a 1970s Dawes Mirage frame in blue. The forks are all chrome and the makers have effected a look of a chrome crown and chrome ends by painting the top 3” or so.

Is there any particular advice on cleaning down this existing paint, and preparing this surface for new paint?

Personally i would do 1 of 2 things;
1. Have the chrome stripped chemically, at your local chrome platers. Then paint the forks.

2. Have the chrome stripped and re-plated.

Old chrome is a nightmare to prepare and restore ...
There is a state of the art chrome plater in Mexborough. They are well known in the motorcycle restoration world ....
