Handlebar Tape

Post by Cube Rider »

Have just replaced 'again' my bar tape for Lizard Skin and have one question, does wearing gloves cause the wear shown in my Before & After pictures?

The bike being a Cube Agree C:62 SL so original tape was obviously Cube. I then replaced that with Fizik and now to the Lizard Skin, I bought the bike February 2017 which has now been ridden just over 3,500 miles, the gloves I wear are Cube which have a leather cloth palm

That's the Lizard skin?
Different tapes wear at different rates and maybe that was some fragile stuff. Do your hands move about? Gloves maybe a bit rough. Doubt it though.
Never managed that much wear but wouldn't let it get to that state so can't say how long it would have taken me. put money on it being poor tape plus excessive movement.

Lever hoods look low so maybe undue pressure on tape. Hard to tell though.

The Lizard Skins tape has layers of different materials,
the outer layer does wear off. The tape is meant to be wrapped
without stretching, if stretched it wears faster (micro cracks).

The above limits earn Lizard Skins tape the CTC tags "fancy" & "silly money"

If you wish to spend silly money on bar tape, Shaker chair tape is lovely.

I had lizard skins on my bars once, hated the feel of it so never got to wear it out, but appreciate bar tape choice is a personal thing.

The way it appears to be wrapped, it will tend to unwrap with typical hand pressure. I’d call that backward unless I’m not reading the picture correctly.

Some bar tapes wear like with or without gloves. Doubt it makes much difference.

By the way, the stem clamp looks overtightend to the point that the top ears are touching. The lower ones aren’t. Maybe the steerer tube is too short or the bolts weren’t tightened in small increments or to the same torque. I’d have a good look at that (with a torque wrench) before worrying overly about the tape.

I agree and disagree.
The drops are correct, but the tops are wrong.
It looks like the drops and the tops have been wrapped separately.

I have always taped my bars like the op and never had it come loose, so maybe it doesn’t matter a whole lot?

The palm of some gloves/mitts is more abrasive to the tape than others - I have a pair of Endura mitts that eat bar tape but others that don't make a mark.

On one bike the tape (similar to the Cube stuff) is getting a bit thin, its been on the bike for best bit of five years, many hundreds of hours riding.

I do have Lizardskin tape on one of the other bikes - I hate it but after spending out on it i'm loath to replace before it really needs doing.
Convention? what's that then?
