People who provided or shorten cranks in the UK?

Hi.

I'm going to need a couple of pairs of short or shortened cranks. I have a good lead with a guy in the U. S. but the price is added to quite considerably with postage, Parcel Farce and no doubt import duties.

So before I go ahead and make more serious enquiries I was wondering if anyone had better ideas?

Should is help I'm looking for two tripples starting 22 (20 would be better but not really in our price range) 32 ish, 42-44.

In lengths;

160mm or lower by up to about 10%. Think SJSC can provide at around £120. Not bad I think.

Harder it seems 140mm or slightly lower as above. Initial costings seem to be more like £170 plus for a crankset I can buy at 175mm for £35-40.

We are new to short cranks so any thoughts appreciated.

The chainrings are probably not very good quality.

The Stronglight Impact Kid Triple Chainset 26/36/46T (130mm-155mm) is probably a better option, but it seems to be out of production. Their double is widely available.

There is also the Suntour RBR604. Haven't seen any under 150mm though.

SJS’s own Thorn cranks are good, look well made... I have a pair in 145mm. Other options are Lasco brand cranks in 152mm as used on ICE recumbent trikes. They seem good to, but not as polished and well finished as the Thorns.

When I switched to short cranks I followed Sheldon’s advice on gain ratios and shrunk the chainrings by the same amount. I had some misgivings about an apparently lower top gear though I more than make up for it it faster cadence.

Spa Cycles Impact kids cranks down to 130mm £38 but 110bcd so may not be useful?

Highpath Engineering will shorten a chainset but any frame builder worth his salt should be able to as well. Most small engineering companies should be capable as well. Not cheap though, I had some done a couple of years ago and cost £40 to shorten a Spa cycles chainset. This gave me the option to buy chainrings to my choice.

That would be my route. My wife (about 5'2") uses the 160mm and it seems the right size for her.

Cost me less than £30 IIRC for the last pair.

Sugino make nice old school triples in a range of crank lengths. Have to import from US suppliers via eBay. Shop around, not cheap but not out of the ordinary prices for good quality parts.

The larger size cranks are sorted for now but I'm not sure the inner ring will prove small enough in the long term.

Shortening seems to be the way to go for the smaller cranks. Highpath seem a little hard to work with only in as much as I need to buy/borrow a printer to complete an order and has too long a lead time. US seems to be better for that so far though not sure.

I didnt want to bother Mr Burrows but think I'll try as it seems crazy to order from abroad.

There were also some new posts I shall be investigating.
