Looking at bike computers on ebay I came across this speedo in the link, They say things come back into fashion if you wait, mind you it would look the part on a Toggle chain bike.

Not new again until they are charging £75 for a 'Made in the USA' version I feel

I has something very similar (might have been Smiths) on my bike around 1964.
Along with a hub dynamo, electric horn, battery case for lighting when stopped, indicators (yes, orange blinking indicators with a switch on the handlebars) - real high tech.
Everything now brand spanking new 55 years on.

I don't recall seeing any of these in the wild, though.

I had one of those on my bike as a kid - fabulous fun seeing how fast I could go across the field on my racer....
Even remember which bit of the field we used to use (most of the rest of the common route was tie path, and didn’t really lend itself to straight line speed - this bit cut off a big curve in the river...

Is there a way of re-calibrating to account for wheel size ?

That brings it back to me. 10 years old, cards clipped onto my front forks and rear stays to make a highly satisfying "motorbike" sound, and using one of these speedos to see how fast I could go down the "big hill" near our house. Of course I crashed and never imitated a motorbike again (but I still go down big hills like a loon).

Old timey looking speedo, but really a gps gadget,( $550 USD, )

There wasn't. Dunno if there is nowadays, but back then, no.
Same as the old clicky mileometer. You could buy them for 26" wheel or 27" wheel. No accounting for any other size or tyre size either.

Ah!
Slipstreaming the double decker bus down the hill on the way home to see how fast I could go.
Can't remember now what my best effort was but it was a 30 mph limit and the bus wasn't that fast.
