fitting a new front mech!!!

Post by lauriematt »

hi guys !

fitting a new front mech on my specialised sirrus!! the old one is loose/rattly and worn...only two years old but its done some miles!!!

normally on the cage you can unscrew it...allowing you to simply slip the chain into the mech! but with this one the cage is joined by a rivet so i have to seperate the chain, put it through the mech cage, and then join the chain back up!

wots the easiest method to join the chain back together???

its not the easy push/pull kind of chain thats easy to seperate...its just links. iv got the right tools to seperate it

See your point about the chain, can be fiddly, a job I've done many times over. I take you have a chain tool, to push the pin out is about 6 full turns of the tool. To push back the pin, is to reverse the tool and again 6 full turns. If the chain links feels stiff, just flex the chain back and forth a bit.

Careful ! The pin mustn't be allowed to pop out of the outside link. The extraction requires a delicate touch, half-turn at a time, until you can just separate the chain, leaving the pin still firmly fixed in the outer link.

The Rolls Royce solution is to fit one of these:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... in%20Links

They come in different widths for different chains.

With one in your chain, you can separate the chain easily to do maintenance/cleaning/fit new front derailleurs etc.
