drop bars that split in the middle

Post by ftm917 »

I have an ebike that I would love to fit drop bars to, as I prefer the hand positions, I had a good few years ago a steel road bike where the handlebars were cut in the middle and could be re-joined and bolted back together, does anyone still make these ?

I have a vague recollection of such bars, intended to allow Gripshift units to be mounted on the flat section. I've no memory of who made them, nor the failure rate.

in addition to the above, there are also many different handlebars here

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/handlebars-other/

including some that come apart (hopefully not when you are using them...).

If you want a dropped bar shape but that allows you to fit things on you can add 'dropped' bar ends to a flat bar

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bar-ends/

and this bar has a reduced width centre bulge

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/handlebars/440-thorn-drop-handlebars-for-gilles-berthoud-rohloff-shifter-254mm-clamp-black/

so that things which mount to a 23.8mm dia can be mounted close to the stem.

Finally there are such things as dropped bars which are 22.2mm diameter for most of their length. These allow parts that fit to standard flat handlebars to them (22.2mm dia) to be mounted, provided the clamps are split or will slide over the bends.

cheers

I have a Bike Friday Air Friday model, which has a split drop handlebar using an internal shim and external sleeve. I've been using it for over 20 years without problem. See http://www.cornerload.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=bike_friday_handlebars. But I have no idea where you could buy such a handlebar as a separate item, and the Bike Friday clamp on their stem is considerably wider than the clamp on most stems, so you might also need a stem with such a clamp.

I converted our tandem to drops by using the Origin8 bar ends from Brucey's link (https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/handlebars/ ... nds-black/). I left the flat bar shifters in place, swapped the flat bar brakes for "interrupter" levers & added drop bar levers on the bar ends (Tektro V brake ones in both instances - to match the cable pull of the brakes).

That's brilliant thanks for the replies I'd never thought of the bar ends but trying to find 22mm curved sections so I can get the controls over them if someone could explain how you thank people in this forum individually I will otherwise many many thanks
