Driveside Hollowtech11 chainset spacer/washer/seal?

Post by jamesofyorkshire »

On the driveside of a Hollowtech 11 chainset there's a washer/seal/spacer thingy on the axle, right up against the main body. It's like a lipped metal washer with rubber inside. I guess it goes up against the BB when the axle is pushed through the BB.
Anyway, I need a new one but don't know what it's called exactly. I asked a mechanic in a bike shop and he didn't know what I was talking about. I have a Tiagra, a 105 (5800) and an Ultegra (all Hollowtech 2) chainsets and they all have one of these washer/seal/spacer thingies on the axle up against the main body/spider.

Can anyone advise where I might get one, or a Shimano part number, or even its name!

Shimano merely calls it a ‘ring’. Look up the exploded view for your cranks on si.shimano.com and read off the part number, then Google that. For example, for your FC-5800 cranks (PDF) it is part number Y1F316000, available here.

I fitted a thin o-ring on mine, never had a problem with it.

What I found important is to check the way the non-drive side crank fits: there is a small plate in the middle of the non-drive side crank, which has to engage the hole at the end of the crank axle.
My take is that such hole is meant to check the correct fitting of the non-drive crank onto the axle.

IIRC this part is slightly squashy and helps both to seal and maintain preload on the bearings (even if there is some settling). Often there is one both sides.

cheers

I'd try sjs cycles. They might also be able to tell you what exactly you need of you give them the product code of your cranks.

I gave a link to the SJS Cycles part for FC-4700, FC-5800, and FC-6800. Which cranks do you have that need a new ring?

Yes, I looked at that. It doesn't look the same as the part I need.....but maybe it will do anyway.

Returned to my bike this weekend.......here is the part I'm looking for as this one is not in the best of health.

Like I said, not easy to describe so I pulled the chainset.

That looks more like the part I have on my 5703 chainset ?
Part 5 - Which my guess is it functions to keep grot out of the bearing. ?
https://si.shimano.com/pdfs/ev/EV-FC-5703-3004B.pdf
There is also a ring (pt-6) in conjunction with it.

It could be that you have the wrong part on yours. :?
You'll never know if you don't try it.
