Does anyone know what thickness of material 22.2mm handlebars typically are? Is there normally difference in thickness between aluminium and steel bars?

steel bars are normally much thinner-walled than aluminium bars. Aluminium bars vary in wall thickness depending on the material they are made from. If the question is really "will bar end shifters fit my 22.2mm handlebars?" the answer is usually "yes" if they are steel, but not if they are aluminium.

steel bars are normally about 1.5mm wall thickness but aluminium ones vary from ~2mm to about 3.5mm.

cheers
