The extra gears are pretty irrelevant on my tourer, which with a 7 speed 11-28 cassette gets everything from 20" to 90" without any insanely complicated shift patterns.

I'm currently running a custom 14-34 9sp casstte with a 24-39 Alpine double S/light Impact chainset giving 20in to 79 inches, which is proving very reliable with Deore MTB pods in Jones loop bars on one bike and drops with Sun Race D/tube levers in Kelly Take offs on another

If you didn't want a customised cassette and don't mind a little wider ratios an 11-34 with a 24-34 c/set gets you 20 to 89inches.

I'm finding the Alpine double to be really simple to work with, especially off road :)
