How to connect chain pusher on Brompton

Post by Tinpotflowers »

Brompton M Type 6 Speed under bar shifters

I
Replace failed left hand gear lever with new one and insert new cable
Replace Spring Set and Cable Stop for Gear Trigger

https://www.rutlandcycling.com/componen ... lsrc=aw.ds

Clean and lubricated Derailleur chain pusher assembly - QCHPUA

https://brilliantbikes.co.uk/brompton-d ... chpua.html

installed cable guilds as per photograph

connect cable from lever to connector and secure with grub screw

PROBLEM

I been told you do NOT secure the cable from the spring to the connector, HOW CAN THIS WORK THEN?

I do not understand the next and final stage to finish the operation to permit gear changing

Yes but my error was not to take mental note.

If you need to take apart something you have never done before no matter what it is, take loads of photos as it comes apart, one benefit of digi cameras these days

Notice the round plastic block that has two small (1.5mm) grub screws at 90º offset: the back side is connected to a short piece of gear wire that ends with the wire head inside the tube/dogleg. This part should never be removed!
But since the damage is done, needs to be fixed. Start by removing the gear wire coming from the front (shifter) side.
Good news are, if that short piece of gear wire has the end frayed, it's easy to replace with any discarded gear wire. Make it the same length, insert from the back of the tube/dogleg (removing the 4mm screw) and keep it pushed with a 3mm allen key so to move it all the way forward, slide the wire in the plastic block and secure the 1.5mm grub screw. No need to go mad tightening.

Once this is done, make sure all the parts are aligned, you must have the round block moving in the plastic sleeve, and the chain-pusher has to move accordingly. Try to shift the gears, it has to work by pulling the round block with your hand. If not, check if you haven't fixed the wire too tight or too slack, it is normal for the round block to move almost all the way out.
Also check that the bolt fixing the chain-pusher to the frame is tight enough, if you haven't fitted the washer it will lock, so make sure it's assemble correctly and moves without any friction while the bolt is firmly in place. The opposite is true for the long bolt connecting the tube/dogleg to the chain-pusher, this has to be slightly slack.

Assuming the chain-pusher does its job in shifting the sprockets, you can now rejoin the gear wire coming from the shifter to the round block. It doesn't have to get the wire very tight, you can adjust with the barrel in the shifter.
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...
