Garmin 800 not showing track up

Post by mnichols »

My garmin 810 has developed a problem where it's not showing "track up" when navigating

In fact it often shows me cycling "track down"

It does show trackup when it zooms into a junction, but doesn't recognise all junctions, and sometimes thinks that bends are junctions when they aren't

This makes junctions difficult as sometimes left is right, left is left, right is left or right is right

It also seems to have developed a problem where if it loses the course it gets very confused and when you get back on course it has problems calculating the distance to destination

Anyone else having this problem? It used to work ok

I’m assuming that you have tried the navigation/map settings?

Have you changed the activity profile you are using (even by accident) as the map orientation is set seperately for each.

(Tools) > Activity Profiles > (choose profile) > Navigation > Map > Orientation

Should let you check / change the setting.

Yes, it's set to track-up

Actually just plugged it in to Garmin Express and it says that it's an Edge 800 not an 810 (i'll see if I can edit the title)

It doesn't have separate settings for activity profiles, just one for all

Are you saying that it was ok before, but not ok now?

If you're concerned that you're doing everything right, but the 800 is wrong, why not do a factory reset and then reload the newest software?
It's only a computer when all's said and done, and sometimes they get a tad corrupted.

I don't know any of the 800 series, but someone will know how to do a factory reset.
Reload the software via Garmin WebUpdater.

It may sort you out, or it may not. It's worth a punt I reckon.

In that case the things I would try ( in this order) would be:-

  1. Change the map setting to one of the other options, back out of the menus, turn unit off, turn back on & change map setting back to what you want.
  2. Do a hard restart (no data should be lost) - hold power button for 10 seconds. Repeat step 1 if necessary.
  3. Clear all user data (back up anything you want to keep onto your computer first) - hold finger on top left corner of screen while you turn it on the select "yes".
  4. Restore to factory settings (again back up things you don't want to lose first) - settings > system > initial setup > factory default reset > yes
Hopefully one of those will help.

Yes, it was working for many years and at some point started doing what I have described.

This was annoying, but didn't really cause too many issues over winter, but now it's summer and I'm touring again on unfamiliar roads, and it's led my astray a few times.

I will erase the data - I don't need any of it and do a factory reset / restore to defaults

I need to get it sorted before my next tour

I've done this now. I've also logged a question with Garmin

I'll test it at the weekend

Tested the Garmin on Saturday and it looks like the factory reset has solved the issues

Excellent! :D

Now you've done a reset, you should check the software for updates.

Done that thanks.

I was getting a bit worried as I didn't want to have to buy another one. This one has served me well, and does what I need it to do.

The new ones have a lot of extra features around performance and links with Strava, etc, but I'm not on Strava and just use the unit for mapping. I like to know how far I've done, how much climbing and how fast (sometimes), but as my Dad would say the new ones would tell you the ins and outs of cats backside......or words to that effect.
