Raleigh bottom bracket

Postby CliveyT » 5 Aug 2019, 9:36am

Mrs T's much loved but venerable (reasonably- probably 1984) Raleigh Richmond needs a new bottom bracket. Originally 1x5, it was converted to a front triple in the early 90's and it now has what looks like a Shimano splined square taper bottom bracket.
Haven't started taking it out yet, and photos will follow as I do, but wouldn't an early/mid 80s Raleigh have a 26tpi bottom bracket? If so has anyone ever made a Raleigh threaded square taper bb? Or can I assume that I'm looking at a standard (English) thread?
Unfortunately I've thrown out my old bottom brackets so I haven't got anything to screw into the shell and see if it fits.

Measure across the bracket from face to face. Modern 24 tpi are 68 mm. Raleigh 26 tpi are above 70 mm.

Corrected from 76mm to 70mm. Whoops.

shimano BBs (or anything that look like them) were not made in 26tpi so if it has one of those in it, it isn't 26tpi.

cheers

Plan A must be to get it out and see what if anything is written on it.

I’ve got a 1984 Raleigh Richmond and it definitely has a standard ISO 24tpi bottom bracket (as do the 1983 Raleigh Royal and the 1984 Raleigh Classic 15 that I also own). I think by the 80s, only the very bottom rung Raleigh’s still used their proprietary 26tpi threading.

I've recently fettled a 1978-ish Carlton and a pretty modern Shimano BB came out which then went into a modern frame with no problem.
