Bottom Bracket - non drive side cup

Postby gxaustin » 19 Sep 2019, 6:41pm

The non drive side cup of my cartridge BB is aluminium. I plan to put it in an alloy frame. Has anyone had a corrosion problem with ally screwed into ally? I shall of course use copper grease on the threads but I have had to get quite brutal with BBs to remove them from alloy frames before now.
Thanks

I've not had a problem but if you're worried you could use a plastic cup - it doesn't do much as most of the strain is on the drive side of the BB shell (ask at the LBS ...)

Aluminium is bad for galling. I'm not sure that copper anti seize is best for it. Zinc or non metallic ones are recommended instead.

if you want to get a BB out easily in the future then

a) you need to use anti-seize on it (and IME copper-ease is as good as anything)
b) you need to stop water from getting into the frame
c) it isn't a bad idea to remove the BB every year or two and repeat the treatment.
