Hi
Headset was feeling a bit grindy.
So I removed the forks and sure enough the top and bottom bearing sets seem dry and rusty.
There will be more life in them yet though.
In the bottom bearing set the balls are exposed and I can readily grease them.
In the top bearing set though the balls are enclosed with just the minutest of gap in the casing, so it wont be possible to get grease onto them. So the choice is, leave alone or lubricate with oil. I would be prepared to reapply the oil every couple of weeks or so. Which do people think is best, leave alone or apply oil ?
Rgds.

Re: lubricating headset
there's usually a way of getting better access to the bearings. Also note that grease can usually be forced through quite small gaps if needs be.
One easy approach is to use an aerosol semi-fluid grease; this is runny enough to penetrate small gaps as it comes out, but the solvent flashes off to leave a more persistent lubricant.
cheers

Re: lubricating headset
You're right brucey. Prised the unit open a bit with a watchmakers screwdriver and persuaded some grease in. Might last me through the winter now. Fitting lizard skins.
Re: lubricating headset
For very tight places I use a medical syringe.
I wish it were as easy as riding a bike
