What Not To Make Bike Frames Out Of

Postby NATURAL ANKLING » 11 Oct 2019, 11:47am

Hi,
Seems like a good question considering how people like their exotic materials :)

Mine's – corrugated cardboard soaked in wax.
Pro's - You can set light to it and it will keep you warm and burn a long time.
Cons – it will tend to flex more in hot weather.

£5 says someone mentions carbon fibre within the first page of replies ;)

Can I go with caesium? You’ll need good mudguards.

Plastic, like the Itera.

The following year was worse. Boxes of bicycles piled up in shops. Among them were returns, mostly with broken parts. Where metal bends, plastic breaks. Getting replacements was not simple as the parts were incompatible with other bikes. Attempts to save the project were unsuccessful.

Pasta.

For: available in lots of interesting tube profiles, removes need for separate energy bars, easy recycling.
Cons: Don't ride in the rain or park outside Italian restaurants.

Concrete -

It's either a headwind, or you're going well.

Magnesium, Been done, Kirk Precision. I am told you have to keep paint chips at bay or the frame dissolves.
We have a couple at the National Cycle Museum. Like previous poster says .

Bamboo . Also been done many years ago. I understand cargo ships were returning empty from Japan so they started bringing bamboo back, some enterprising individuals made bike frames with cast metal lugs.
We have a couple at the National Cycle Museum too.

I believe bamboo is stronger than steel tube, it is widely used as Scaffolding where it grows locally.

Plastic. Iteria and Strida (and others) . Guess what. We have them at the Museum too.

Yes and it proved that you shouldn't make frames out of it!

You work there?

Completely off topic.
I have an original and complete 1968 RSW16.

I've clicked on the Contact Us button a couple of times or more over the past few years offering to bring it up so they can have it. I don't want it, and I don't want to scrap it. Original tyres still hold air, and it rides beautifully ............. for an RSW16.

Never received a reply one way or another. If they don't want it, fair enough, but I'd like to know.
