Stupid question but can I throw this out to the room.
I've replaced my QR skewers with security skewers.
Front wheel, no problem at all.
Back wheel, there was this grating noise after I'd replaced the skewer.
I took it out, checked everything, put it back with the same result.
So, I took it out, put the original QR skewer back in, but it still made noise.
I looked at everything carefully, put the new skewer in, checked again, then rode the bike around the garden.
As far as I can tell, the tyre is rubbing on the mudguard. It wasn't before, although the clearance was pretty tight, but I haven't moved the wheel at all - literally just took the old skewer out and put the new one in without even touching anything else.
What am I doing wrong?!?

running the tyre too close to the mudguard, so that tiny movements can make the difference between it rubbing or not....?
cheers

Hi,
Loosen skewer then put weight on rear of bike, lean on saddle or sit on the rack, retighten skewer.
Same applies to front.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. My lbs fitted the tyres, a bit fatter than the elderly ones they replaced. Is that going to be a remove the mudguard or a get new tyres? Or spend hours faffing around to get the seating right ?

You posted this while I was typing. Thanks: I'll try in the morning.

I assume that you are doing this with the wheels on the floor. If not do that. Of course it may be that the guards were put in with crooked wheels! Equally if the clearance is tight you may well have knocked the guard at some point. Bend it right.

Re: Replaced skewers, wheel rubbing on mudguard
Hi,
Fatter tires, you may well have to extend the stays a bit, to give a bit more clearance on the tires.
If your LBS did this, that is fitted new tires and put the wheels back on, Then they should of re-space the mudguards.
But you did say you have swapped the skewers, and the rubbing happened after this.
It's also possible that there is not enough room for fat tyres and the mudguards under the brakes?

Yup, extending the mudguard stays worked. No more rubbing. Many thanks.
(Space under the brakes wasn't so much of an issue, what with my centre pull cantis...)
