Winter commute tyres

Post by Jurassic2 »

I'm currently using 28mm gatorskins for my 10 mile (road) daily commute, not sure if the compound has recently changed but the current tyres seem to be a bit "slippy" and it's not really got into autumn / winter yet.

Any suggestions for an alternative !!!

yeah gatorskins are a fairly hard compound. However they also go even harder over time, so depending on your mileage vs time they might well go super-hard before they wear out. New gatorskins are not a grippy tyre per se, but they might well be appreciably better than old ones.

It might be worth saying how an alternative tyre could (realistically) differ from gatorskins and still meet your needs.

cheers

I have heard this too - unfortunately about a week after I bought a pair!
TBH I haven't put this to the test yet. I suppose I should have at least run them in before the leaves fell but the temptation to ride the off-road trails on another bike was too great.
Just how 'bad' are they. Are we talking in relative terms compared to modern compounds or as bad as dry and cracked 30 year old tyres dragged out of a shed?
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

they are sufficiently slippy that one of my chums won't use them for winter training any more; one of his favoured routes goes up a hill where he gets wheelspin on gatorskins, but not on most other tyres.

+1 for GP4 seasons, they come in 32s as well if you can fit them
I did like my Duremos as well

Or there is the IRC formula tyres which are tubeless. I haven't tried them but the bumf sounds impressive!

if your frame has clearance for these then they're really good.

Schwalbe don't have anything with such good puncture resistance as the Gatorskin.
One I've never heard of is the the Prelli Cintutrato Velo which has better puncture resistance and rolls better as well with a thick tread. Trouble is many of these new tyres are coming in at crazy prices now.
I'm going to keep my Schwalbe Ones on and see how well they do on my shortish trips out on this bike this winter. I thought my Gatorskins felt sluggish and the tests above seem to confirm that.

What about Marathons? Surely they are more puncture resistant than Gatorskins.
I've a couple hanging in the garage- 25 I think - that you can have for postage.
