Uk custom framebuilder thinking out of the box
Uk custom framebuilder thinking out of the box
Hi folks
I'm looking for a recommendation for a frame builder who is a little less traditional than the main players.
The build will be a fat bike cargo, 190 rear bolt through, 100mm BB etc.
Who is likely to be responsive to this?

I remember George Longstaff making a number of bikes for disabled riders in the style of a modern cargo bike, but they're not going now. Not sure if there is any builder heavily into this style of bike, but I've seen a few hub-geared, commuter bikes from Mercian.
I should coco.

That's a shame, when did they close, the website is still looks current.
18 Bikes in Sheffield might be an option, they have some MTB history, and the couple I've seen look great.
There's also Poetry in Motion who make some odd stuff, I know nothing of them other than what they've displayed at York Rally.
There was a framebuilder displaying in a now closed Derby shop, but I can't remember the name, they were making 29ers before they were commonplace and BMX for some of the top competitors. I'll add the name if it comes to me, sure it begins with a S.
What is it you're looking for that isn't available off the shelf?

Ben at Kinetics is a very friendly chap and built an extreme recumbent for my brother in law a few years ago. He does a lot of bespoke parts fit Bromptons and will literally turn his hand to anything if it piques his interest:

Do you already have, or have you tried, a Surly Big Fat Dummy?

Try Lee Cooper in Coventry. I had a particular set of requirements (not yours though) and he was the only one I could find who would help. Time will tell if there's a reason for this not do far, so good.

Adrian at 6-4 frameworks https://sixfourframeworks.com/about/ 28 years at Roberts who recommend him since they are no longer making frames themselves.
He uses a gravel bike frameset as an example for pricing, which looking at it is only £50 more than the latest Enigma Endeavour off the peg job which uses same tube set, if I was buying I know where my money would be of the two.

Thread Drift..
...really like the way the front light, its mounting and the front light protection have all been incorporated into the tubus front low rider. That's so damn tidy! (Guessing, too that the wiring runs inside the track's hollow frame. The man's a genius - thanks for sharing the link

If it doesn't you can wait a long time, though.
Re: Uk custom framebuilder thinking out of the box
Thanks guys, I'll look into these suggestions.
The Surly Big Fat Dummy is too big.
The Salsa Blackborow is perfect size wise but I want steel, and a custom built in rack.
It is for hauling off road, work related, hence the desire for 5" fat tires. Very boggy ground.
It will get a Bafang e conversion, another reason the Salsa won't do, as the BB area is incompatible.
cheers
all.
