Front light with bar bag?

Post by robing »

Anyone have a solution to fitting a front light when you use a bar bag? I could use forks but my forks don't really lend themselves to mounting a light, plus I'd be worried about it going in to the spokes if it got a knock etc.

I use one of these which allows the light to go below the bar bag. I had to take a file to it to allow my brake cable to pass freely but not a big Issue. https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/images/prod ... /22455.jpg

I got - from SJSC - a little 'block' which screws into one of the front fork bosses and lets the light straps go round it. Good position for the light and out of the way.

I use one of these on all my bikes:

Not sure how the world would have got on had SJS not made them.

There are various accessory bars you could use but if bar space is an issue there are other options. I've used lights mounted on the drops (if your bracket will allow that), the same with the fork options. I've also seen something like a BMX peg mounted at the axle to provide a mounting point.
Convention? what's that then?

I started using a bar bag again this year, sure I had my old Karrimor one somewhere but failed to find it. So had to buy a new one, I was aware that I would have to move the light from the bars where I had it mounted below the bars.
Ended up mounting the light on the fork crown, which worked well and did not restrict the light in any way. But I did get a smallish bag as didn't want it to drop down too low to the light. I sometimes mount a battery light on the bars as a backup and this isn't ideal now if the bar bag is in place.

Ortleib do these https://www.ortlieb.com/uk/ultimatesix-adapter that give a mounting above or below the bag without taking space on the handlebar (how well it works above / below will depend on how deep the bag is etc.).

My Carradice bar bag came with a light bar like this https://www.gbcycles.co.uk/p/125158/Car ... er-bracket that clicks into a plastic mount on the bottom of the bag. This is OK as a backup / emergency option, but it wobbles about with the bag, so it is not ideal for mounting a primary light, and of course only works with (some) Carradice bar bags.

I have one of these https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b29s169p3 ... unt-CS-500 but they are a bit flimsy - wobbles from side to side, keeps working loose with a light on it, and the threads in the aluminium the screws screw into strip easily. So, avoid these and choose the sturdier one from SJS recommended above!

So, one that may work that I haven't tried, and two that don't work so well that I have tried!

There are a variety of options. If you have enough space below the bag you can get various mounts to use lamp fitting there.

There is also a fitting you could use on a low rider mount

Or this

Or a similar one that replaces the nut end of a QR skewer

Alternatively, if you can get an attachment that let's you use a gopro mount you can attach the light anywhere you could fix a camera. For instance, I've used one to fix my exposure light below the bottom of the offside of drop bars.

Nitto Lamp Holder

you can fit it so that it's vertical and clears the bag .... I looked at these as I was going to get an Ortlieb bar bag .... you can attach other itmes aswell (such as your satnav, phone etc)

here is a smaller version (also by Nitto)

Easy if you have a front rack because there is loads of metalwork over and around the front wheel.

On my Spa the light is on the fork crown and well below the bar bag (although my bars are very high).

There's also this if your bar bag uses R&K Klick Fix fitting.

Plenty of advice for moving the light, there's also the option of lowering the bag if if you have a few spacers and enough space. Something like the T bar linked by horizon, which come in a few sizes, or a stem and sort length of bar, If it's a light you might want to adjust while riding, keeping it on the bars is an advantage, otherwise IMO the fork crown is the best place for it.

I bought one of those in the hope of mounting a light on it, but it faces backwards and doesn't lift a light high enough for the beam to clear a bag, none of my three anyway.
