Mudguards For Hybrid

Post by foxychick »

Is it it possible to purchase front and rear full length mudguards for a hybrid bike with a suspension fork, the front fork does not have any eyelets on, i am running 700 x 42 tyres, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I think it will be quite easy to find mudguards of the right size, try googling e.g. Flinger and SKS but the difficult thing will be fitting them to the suspension fork...At the fork crown you may be able to use zip-ties to make a strong enough support. On the fork legs you could get some big P-clips or you may be able to use the ends of the QR skewer, if your bike has one, and if there is no disc brake in the way. Photos of the fork crown and drop-out area would be useful if you need more advice. Make sure you use the safety release clips.

At the rear, if the bike has sufficient clearance for a mudguard, has bridges on the seatstays and the chainstays and has a pair of eyelets near the drop-out then fitting should be straightforward...

When you say without eyelets, I assume you mean eyelets at fork bottoms for stay attachment. If you have a fixing hole at the fork crown, try some guards without stays. I have an old Dawes hybrid with a suspension fork. It does have eyelets, but I'm not using them. I fitted SKS Velo Trekking 47mm mudguards without using stays. (You can buy the guards alone, no stays). The front is stable enough without them. The rear is probably OK, but it was easy just to cable tie the rear mudguard to my carrying rack to stop any lateral movement - again no stays. I'm using the 47mm ones with 35mm Marathons, but you can go up 2 more mudguard sizes - 55mm "Cross" or 65mm "Mountain". The guards work well and I wish I had fitted them years ago.

Those eyelets look useful although you may need to get some little right angled brackets, either from the usual suspects (i.e. SJS or Spa) or Screwfix, Toolstation, local hardware shop.

Edit: Something like this: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/mudguards/sks-suntour-angle-bracket-pack-of-4/

Edit again: I assume that they are eyelets and not for something else, e.g. adjusting the suspension, I am not an expert!
