Finally remembered to update this. The main cause of the problems was that the crankset was sitting too far out to the right due to various mashed up spacers/seals that had been squashed in betweeen it and the right hand bearing, so the outer chainring was too far outboard for the FD's range of movement. Removing all that but the one correct seal ring and fitting a correct Sora left shifter, along with gear cable housing instead of brake cable housing :roll: and dialing it all in restored it to a fully functioning triple chainset.

don't you just hate that when that happens, we've all being there! 8)
