Primus Pump Lucky I Did Not Need It

Post by NATURAL ANKLING »

Hi,
On my trip down under to the shaded shores of cornwall :?
I took my old steel hack from 1983, Koga-Miyata GentsRacer-aero, only the frame and frame pump was original, all other parts are replaced with NOS, mostly gleaned from overseas.

I did not use the frame pump to inflate the tyres but home track pump before I set off and did not use air at all over a week, I know the pump works and seals on the presta valve, but never tested it to full 120 psi.
Decided to test it out at how the other day, Bang  The screw cap plastic sheared off above the thread at about 100 psi.
I think I remember doing a repair a few years ago with super glue, I just the other day superglued it together to measure it up make a sketch to hunt down a replacement screw cap, then I found some NOS pump ends on ebay.
Ok so my parts are past their sell by date.
If the ebay NOS parts are unused I only need the screw cap and use the rubber too maybe.
But anyone knowledge of how the pump end secures to the aluminium body?
There does not seem much to bite on the nos pump end, whats the ident in my aluminium body do? Its not going to bite on the pump end?

Those screw on caps may be a standard item across a range of cheap plastic pumps. I had a similar failure on a pump which came with a new bike. Fortunately it was a MTB wheel which needed pumping on the road following a visitation :(
The pump held together with hand pressure to get enough air in to get me home. I'll have a look tomorrow and measure up if I have any.
That eBay one you pictured looks like it is meant to screw onto a continental type pump which had an external male brass threaded coupling unlike the more common female threaded couplings on UK pumps.

Hi,
The OD of thread is measured at about 19 mm on the primus.
I have a few other pumps with no lever and one with a lever, they are smaller and different thread too.
I will probably buy one of the pump heads I shown up thread, and hope the quality is up to scratch.
Also look for another frame pump, needs to be 120 psi, the Raleigh also has a frame pump with a compression lever (circ 1996), now they are out of fashion today?
But there are many frame pumps online.
I am a bit old fashioned so I will probably stick with a frame pump.

Thanks for the offer rjb

Checked my box of spare pumps but I couldn't find any with those screw on caps. Plastic pumps were pretty common and supplied with bikes maybe 20 years ago. Most had those screw on plastic caps. I suspect they had failed in the manner yours had so have been binned. :(

Thanks rjb for looking :)
I am a stickler for keeping things original, but I will as said probably source a new modern frame pump as well as the part I listed in my opening post.
