What endurance road bike would you buy?

Post by nwrothery »

Hi all,

If you had a budget of £3k what endurance road bike would you buy?

I ask as I may open up my wallet (having dusted off the cobwebs) and look to buy a new road bike this summer.

Main criteria:

Full carbon frame
Relatively light. c8KG
Good spec bike for value. Probably 105 spec or above.
Comfort.
Good looking machine (high on the list!)

I was thinking either Canyon Ultimate or Ribble Endurance SL with a few tweeks on their Bike Builder.....

Any comments welcome to help me decide :)

Thanks

A mate of mine got a Reilly Ti bike recently.

They look fabulous to me.

If I had £3k to spend it'd be custom high end steel 853 or 953 from reputable small builder who knows there stuff.

I'd I were to spend £3k on a bike id want something rather special.

Parlee?
Colango?
Swift?
Pinarello?

Mainstream carbon is much of a muchness and subject to journalists hyperbole!

Hi mod does feel different to standard mod, but is a bit more delicate.

Wheels make a bigger difference so factor in having to get some decent wheels if it comes with so so factory wheels.

I don't even know what an endurance road bike is
Even if I did, knowing what it was being used for (Endurance road riding obv  ) and also the rider and what other bikes were in the stable and why you like and/or dislike them, are all things to take into consideration.
It's a good budget, but still IMO the wrong place to start. I've spent similar sums a couple of times, but I've started by working out what I want, then looking at what that costs.

A bike with a short tt and tall ht, in the States they're called 'shopping carts'
Serotta went out business making them, ruined their credibility.

Yeah, but Internet cycling forums are full of US cyclists who think they're the fastest thing on two wheels. Their 'shopping carts' sound just like the Litespeed Veneto (short TT, tall HT) that I bought about 20 years ago and used to win an Australian Masters road title...

Exactly that. A custom frame built for YOU not an off the peg stamping from a mould. Then build it up with a mix of components that you have chosen from your experience not somebody sitting in factory office somewhere.

If I had that sort of money sloshing about it would probably go towards carpeting the upstairs rooms or a loft conversion - or a TCR Advanced Pro.

But if it has to be road endurance I’d go for a Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2 2020 and hope I could haggle a few quid off:

Failing that the Pro 3 with 105 and splurge the rest on carpet grippers or something.

i'd first ask:
what are you riding now? for how long have you been riding it? what do you think is wrong with it if anything?

Hi mig,

Currently riding a Cannodale Synspse with Tiagra gears. Aluminium frame. Bought in 2014. Good condition but bit on the heavy side. It rides well.

Nothing wrong with the Cannondale (infact I'm going to keep it and use it as a winter/bad weather bike).

I'm just looking for something a bit lighter and more sporty as my rides are generally between 35-100 miles each time.
