This is every bike related calculator I have created, all in one package. :mrgreen:

Finally, a set of bike calculators you can use anytime - no need to be online!

Now there's no need to worry about your favourite online calculator being unavailable, whether it's because the website is down, or they aren't at that website anymore and you can't find it again, or you just don't want to go online every time you want to work these things out, or your internet isn't working, or you want to have multiple Gear Inches tables without having to change it every time (thus wiping out your old settings). You might want to save multiple wheel buliding spoke length files - how handy it would be to just have a file for each wheelset!

The old ".xls" format (Excel 97-2003) and the newer ".xlsx" format (for Excel 2007 and later) are both included. These calcs function the exact same way regardless of which file type you use.

To safeguard against editing boxes that should not be edited, these spreadsheets are protected - you can only enter values into boxes where you're meant to, but these spreadsheets do not have a password, so you can unprotect them if you need to, but this is not recommended since the protected cells contain the formulas that do the calculations and some of them are quite complicated.

Unlike online calculators, you can keep your results saved if you simply save the file when closing it.

You can of course also make as many copies of each file as you want, naming them accordingly, so you can have (for example) multiple files showing different gear inches setups.

Also, the gear inches calculator and the spoke calculator are more convenient than online versions I have used because, the gear inches calc shows more info (MPH at cadence and wheel turns per crank revolution) along with differences between each sprocket - and the spoke calc lets you have all four sides of both wheels on screen at the same time.


INCLUDED CALCULATORS:

2-Piece Chain Calc
If you're running a chain that needs to be longer than usual (like on a tandem or recumbent) this calculator can work out how many half-links are needed in each piece. You have to juggle the numbers around until the end result comes out with the correct chain length you know you need.

This can also be used if you have a chain on your bike that you want to lengthen (you might have put a cassette on with a bigger low sprocket) and you have a piece of chain off the bike, you could enter the length (in half-links) of the piece of chain you have off the bike, then keep changing the figure for the 2nd piece until the chain length comes out correct, then you'll know how long to make the length of chain that's already on your bike. After that you can just add the first piece.

You might want to swap between 2 setups where you have a road cassette and a MTB cassette, you'd generally need a chain a few inches longer for the MTB cassette. This is more of an emergency solution where you can't afford to buy a new chain! Running 2 missing links in a chain doesn't seem to create any issues for people that do it and plenty of people do it.
This calc was created because it can get confusing with the missing link taking up 1 half-link. The calc takes away the need to work it out.

Average Speed Distance Time Calc
You can enter your average speed and distance to find out the time that journey will take. You can also enter the time taken and the distance to find out what your average speed will be.

Bike Fitting Calculator
This calc is to be taken with a pinch of salt, but it can give you a rough estimate on how well a bike might fit you.
Get the specs for the bike frame you want to check. On the calculator, enter the effective top tube length in millimeters and enter the seat tube angle, then enter your inside leg measurement in millimeters. The end result will give you a rough percentage - 100% means a perfect fit, anything under 100% means the bike frame is too small for you and anything over 100% means the bike frame is too large for you. If the calculator tells you something like 98% or 102% then this is going to be OK but beyond that, you should think about inputting the figures for the next frame size bigger (if the calc says 98% or less) or the next frame size smaller (if the calc says 102% or more).

This is only meant as a rough guide and you should not use this calculator on its own to make a decision about purchasing a bike! Always test ride any bike you are thinking about buying. Remember that a bike that's slightly too small can be remedied by making the seatpost a little bit longer, or sliding the saddle back slightly more, or putting a slightly longer stem on - but what you cannot fix is a bike that's too large - because it will always be too large.

Chain Length
Input your largest chainring, largest cassette sprocket and your chainstay length to see how many inches long your chain needs to be. This calculator gives the result for bikes using a rear mech that don't have suspension at the rear.
If your bike has suspension at the rear, add 1 inch to the result. If your bike doesn't use a rear mech, subtract 1 inch from the result.

Chainline Calc
By measuring the gap from the edge of your seat tube to the center of your chainrings, this calc saves you needing to do the calculation yourself.

eBike Battery Range
After entering the voltage of your battery and the Amp hour (Ah) capacity, that will tell you how many Watt hours (Wh) your battery is. You can then enter how many Wh per mile you estimate to be getting from your battery - then the total range will be shown in miles under the last green box "Total Range".

There are a lot of variables to why you might get 20 miles or 80 miles from the same battery - for example: tyres not pumped up as much as other tyres, the temperature, wind against you, hills, road surface, your weight and your bike weight. Even so, if you roughly know the Wh per mile being used, this calc can be useful and saves you having to work out the range.
Another handy thing with this calc is, if you used to use a different battery in the past that was a different Voltage and Ah, you can enter those figures, then keep raising or lowering "Wh Per Mile?" to match the range you know you used to get from your old battery. That can give you an accurate estimate for the new battery you're trying to work out the range of, because this takes into account all of the variables that apply to you.

Gear Inches - Basic Version
Note: You need Excel 2010 or later to use this. This is a basic version of the Gear Inches calculator that only shows gear inches in a small compact table. It can work with any amount of speeds up to 12-speed. Results are colour coded so any green results show unique gears, that do not overlap with any other gears on other chainrings.

Note: You need Excel 2010 or later to use this.

This is an extended version of the basic Gear Inches calculator, that shows you more information than any online calculator does! Input your wheel diameter in inches, then input all your chainring and sprocket sizes to see results on three charts, covering: Gear Inches, Speed in MPH and Wheel Turns per crank revolution.
Also included (in the light grey boxes) is the difference between each sprocket. For example on the gear inches chart, where two figures are shown for two sprockets, the inches difference is also shown between those two boxes. Results are colour coded (green for low gears through to red for high gears), so you can quickly see if there's many overlapping (or very similar) gears.

Gear Range
Input your largest chainring, smallest chainring, largest cassette sprocket and smallest cassette sprocket and the calculator will tell you what the resulting gear range is as a percentage.

Spoke Length
This was a very difficult calculator to create and I almost gave up trying to create it, but it got finished in the end!
Input the amount of holes your rim has, ERD (Effective Rim Diameter), center to left flange, left flange diameter and spoke hole diameter to see what exact length of spoke your wheel needs. This calculator has four charts so you get results for everything (each side of each wheel) on the same spreadsheet.

This calculator has been carefully double checked against a trusted calculator (https://leonard.io/edd/) to make sure the results it gives always match it.

Sprocket Clearance
This calculator might be useful to work out exactly how much you need to raise or lower a front mech before swapping to a bigger or smaller chainring (sometimes, bottle cage bolts might stop you clamping a front mech in the required position).
You might want to know how much to adjust your b-tension screw on a rear mech if you plan on swapping to a cassette with a larger or smaller low sprocket. It might save the hassle of buying the part to find it cannot be used because your front or rear mech cannot be adjusted to suit the new chainring or cassette sprocket.

Torque Calc
Input the Nm rating of your bolt. Input the length of the wrench you're going to be using. The force in pounds (and in kilos) is shown as a result. The force shown is the force required at the end of the wrench.

Total Capacity
This calc lets you check that your rear mech cage is long enough, assuming you know what its total capacity is. This calc works out the total capacity after you input the amount of teeth on your biggest/smallest chainrings and the same for your cassette.

Tyre Size Difference Calc
If you run a different size tyre at the front compered to the rear (some people do!) this calc will tell you how much the handlebars will dip. It's not likely you'll ever do this but the calc exists so it can be worked out quickly and easily.

Wrench Extension Torque Calc
If you are using an extension or "cheater" bar on a wrench to get more leverage, this calc can tell you how much less force is needed when the extension is added.

1 year and 2 months later... so how are people getting on with these?

Has anyone used any of them?

I might get to work on a "Cadence at Speed" calc to add into this collection.

Not today though.

Not seen this before but could be good if I could work out how to use it. Tried the gear inches one but could see how to do things.
Bear in mind that to those people who can use computers this is so simple that it incomprehensible that other people can't do it. To those of us who have never used such a thing it could be written in Martian! The gear inches page is incredibly complicated to see things as well. Is a simple version an option. Possibly too much info. The link from Sheldon Browns site whilst not as nice and comprehensive does give much simpler tables of results.
It looks great and would love to use it. Maybe some instructions?

Sorry I don't do instructions :lol:

Hovering over the top left box "Gear Calculators" on the Gear Inches calc is the instructions.

It says this: (Edited on 2nd March 2022 to reflect the latest)

Although this table is titled Gear Inches, it will be in whatever units you have entered into the Wheel Diameter box.

Where it says "HIGH" at the bottom left of this table, in the pale blue box next to that, enter the amount of teeth
on your smallest (highest geared) cassette sprocket - this is typically going to be 11, 12 or 13 teeth. Two boxes up
from that, enter the next sprocket size and keep filling in the pale blue boxes in that column until you have entered
all of your cassette sprockets. Any spare boxes not needed - just put a zero in those boxes and the box will go black.

Single chainring: Use the "Outer" box only, putting zeroes in the "Middle" and "Inner" chainring boxes.
Double chainrings: Use the "Outer" and "Middle" columns, putting zero in the "Inner" chainring box.
Triple chainrings: Fill in all three chainring boxes.

The gear inch results are colour coded so you can instantly see which gears overlap:

Spockets on the INNER chainring:
- Green = Gears lower than the lowest gear on the middle chainring.
- Orange = Gears higher or equal to the lowest gear on middle chainring.

Spockets on the MIDDLE chainring:
- Green = Gears higher than the highest gear on inner chainring.
- Orange = Gears higher than the lowest gear on outer chainring,
or lower than the highest gear on inner chainring, or equal to
the lowest gear on the outer chainring.

Spockets on the OUTER chainring:
- Green = Gears higher than or equal to the highest gear on the middle chainring,
- Orange = Gears lower than the highest gear on middle chainring.

Cynical maybe but I like to keep my computers safe for malicious attacks when they be intentional or, as is more usually the case, unintentionally as the individuals posting files may be unaware their own system is compromised.

In this instance there is little evidence that the file has been downloaded, and therefore verified, by any number of people in the past year or so.

I started to make a Speed at Cadence calc but I'd have to be some sort of Excel genius to even make it.

I got as far as putting in a drop down list for rim sizes but I can't get a scroll bar to go away (and just display all 15 choices) so I gave up in the end. :lol: (Edit on 2nd March 2022, but I did however work this out for my football betting calculator so it is perhaps possible and going to be done).

Even if I managed that part and carried on making it, it's not going to dynamically change like the online one does. It would always show "DIV!" or "####" or whatever for a ton of sprockets that don't apply to what you want to choose.

I think this would take VBA code and so on to make it look and behave well, if it's even possible at all.

The annoying thing is you can't even use the mouse wheel to scroll the list.

Speed at whatever cadence would surely require further information to be accurate?

For example the gear inches the bike was in at the time and whether the pedalling was actually being effective or the rider simply spinning out on a downhill.

If calculating what you could expect then that can be looked at before hand but if looking at historical data you need either a very good memory or a way of measuring it.

There are ways to know what gear the bike was in but that requires some form of electronic shifting with an add on device transmitting that to a head unit. Even then most online sources don’t extract that data from the file created. For Shimano there is di2stats.com and that is about it.

I will try to (find the time to) create a basic version of the calc that only asks for the wheel circumference in mm, with one table on it. Thing is, then the other calcs aren't built into that to work out circumference in mm if you only have it in inches :lol: It could be worse.
