Not as cool as a 13-17 straight-through block.

Ah, my old TT gears with a 42/52 chainset. On tubs and thus so much nicer than my main wheels. I used them therefore, for everything including 100 miles touring days.

A 12-23 cassette was perfectly fine, with a TA Zephyr chainset, 46-34-22. (8s era)
The was 25 years ago in the Renaissance, after the Dark Ages of syncro-shift & accu-shift.

The first time I used 39 x 25, it felt like cheating. In fact, I use 39 x 23 now. It does the job. A 28 wouldn't be so bad if the cassette started at 14. 11-28 is really gappy, though.

I've still got the 16-20 through block that I used in a couple of 3/Js as a 3. I started too late ever to be a J :D

Educate me please: - " 3/Js as a 3. I started too late ever to be a J"

It might be obvious when stated! As a guess J is junior (16t top sprocket).

Back in the days of the British Cycling Federation, there were three adult racing categories. The third cats often raced against juniors, to provide enough races with sufficient fields. Hence there were a lot of 3/Js.

I rode closed circuit events in the late 70s and early 80s. Generally draughty air fields or motor racing circuits (e.g Wroughton, Castle Combe). The races I rode were 3/J/L.

Juniors were limited by gear size not sprocket size. I don't recall what size that gear was.

86", usually achieved as 48*15 or (especially for seniors who wanted to change the block but not the ring) 52*16. Both work out to just over 86" on 27" wheels but not, of course, on 700Cs.

I rode on 52/16. One of my more experienced older member of the club told me not to pump my tubs up until the scrutineer had measured the wheel over a set distance to check the gearing was restricted correctly. :D

Of course, you could just stop down your gears to prevent use of the smaller sprockets. But, with only five sprockets in the first place and anything bigger than 20T being for wimps, that tended not to leave many...

Greg LeMond used to bend the rules by using a 53T instead of a 52T, IIRC. It passed the rollback test.

+1.

I, too, remember all that stuff. But I grew out of it years ago, about the time I discovered triple chainsets.
