Is it worth getting a Pedersen frame and building it up as a bike?

As far as I can gather (from the wonderful website http://pedersenbicycles.com) they can be built up with a regular set of 700 wheels and Deore derailleur components. I guess one would have a single chainring on the front and the largest reasonable range on the back (12-34?)

The saddle is the biggest problem - what might be an alternative to the fancy hammock saddle they traditionally have?

Has anyone here got any experience of doing this, or any views on whether it's even vaguely feasible?

Not cheap, but nothing will be with a niche bike like that.

I admire your sense of adventure, going for something different to the norm, but I would advise going for a test ride and a good conversation with the people selling them.

bad enough without the luggage, but anyone riding that would have to be in love with it....how else would you put up with getting on and off it? Even with the feet forward riding position and the low bottom bracket how do you have the saddle at the correct height for pedalling and still get a foot down when you stop...? It isn't as if you can slide forwards off the nose of the saddle, is it?

BITD Pedersens had a mounting peg at the back, but you can't have one (or use it) when panniers are fitted.

I had a former next door neighbour who had one that he called a Copenhagen Pedersen. It was quite shabby but he cycled everywhere on it dressed in a long black coat and a bowler hat. I rode up the road and back on it once. It was the most awkward time I’ve ever spent on a bike

I believe that the Copenhagen Pedersen was a (relatively) modern reproduction. The original was made in Dursley, unsurprisingly.

Weave your own saddle? It's quite possible according to this website. If you can't buy one this may be an option.
