Condor Bottom Bracket

Post by 220kestrel »

I have in my possession a lovely Condor touring frame.
The problem is that someone, certainly not me, has stripped the threads on the drive side.
I have tried many types square taper, Octalink, HT2 all the same.
Is this a write off?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Kerry.

I've not had to deal with this, so was pondering if a bottom bracket helicoil exists, so I googled and found an old thread here which may be of use:

Sounds like all is not lost.

If your not too precious about the frame you could epoxy the shells in.

It's not irreversible but means the bikes useable?

I think Brucey has done this so it's authorised!!

Argos in Bristol have repaired knackered BB threads by reaming and sleeving the BB on a steel MTB frame I had in the past so no doubt Condor will be able to do the same or some other local frame repairer of repute.

That thread linked above is 10 years old!
Brucey normally recommends fitting a BB unit with epoxy.....I think there are units where if you permanently bond the sleeve into the frame, you can still replace the bearings ...hopefully, our man will be along....

This is from a post in the linked thread

I bought an old Harry Quinn frame...I get it home and thought it best to pull out the bottom bracket...The L/H cup came off easy enough but the right side was a bit of a struggle then all of a sudden it came free. Then I discovered the nobber who sold me the frame had glued in the right cup and the thread was non-existent.

I wonder if it was Brucey who sold it. :)

Threadless bottom bracket?

Mind you, might have to machine away the threads on the other side of the BB shell.

Guys,
Thanks for all the replies.
Looks like it will be put to the back of the shed for a while and then
deposited at the local recycling centre.
Sad but there we are....

epoxy repair is very easy and costs £1 in materials.

And you are going to scrap the bike....?

How much easier and/or cheaper did you want the repair to be, exactly....?

I'm sure there are folk who would take the frame off your hands, depending on where you are, I would.

cheers

From the Great Taiwan Bike Bits Collective.
Expander shelled BB, threadless. Sort of a Quill stem expander bolt bottom bracket.

£1 is nice and cheap but this is part of a collection of bike stuff I have been selling for charity.
The frame was finished by Bob Jackson's and is beautiful except the BB is knackered.
I guess I could sell it if the buyer is aware of the fault.
The frame is just too big for me.....

If you want a custom made bb / axle try Hambini, (google him and his you tube channel) a cycle engineer based in Poole, Dorset. Very high quality and will, if you ask nicely, try and replicate your defective one.

Eh if you don't want to sort the problem out yourself fair enough but just sell it with the problem described. It sounds lovely and the sort of person who would be interested would also be prepared to spend a bit of time/effort on it. It would be a shame to waste it! I'd really like to see a photo if you are prepared to post one on this thread. I have no interest in buying it myself, mind.
