Shimano cantilever BR-AT50 replacement

Postby egpotter » 27 Jun 2020, 1:37pm

Hello,

I just bought a Panasonic Touring deluxe, which came with Shimano cantilever BR-AT50. I am very new to bike mechanics and do not know which newer cantilever I could buy to replace them. Sorry for the stupid question, but I tried searching the forum and was still a bit confused,

Thanks in advance,
Eduardo

Hi,
Why do you want to change the parts?

They can be very fiddly to set up but once done are good brakes. Have a look at this old post for further information.
Replacing them with V brakes for instance isnt alway easy as it will depend upon how far your brake bosses are separated and you will also need compatible v brake levers.viewtopic.php?f=5&t=94515&hilit=at50

BR-AT50 are -when matched with the right levers- pretty good brakes. I would guess that the brakes you have just need a clean-up....?

If you do want to change them you should be aware that

a) not all boss spacings suit all canti brakes and
b) not all cantis have the same mechanical advantage as one another
c) if you are going to change other parts on the bike (brake levers) they need to match the brakes too.

cheers

Thanks a lot for the replies. Based on them I will go for a deep clean and change the Cantilever cable instead of replacing it. I just thought as a newbie it would be better to replace them. Really appreciated your answers!

Having just done the same with mine the braking is substantially better than before. So was worth the time setting/resetting to get right.
