Post by garygkn »

Thanks.

Thank you Brucey.
This has a lot of potential.
I'll get over to the link asap.

I couldn't get that one to work so I went to another online.

chainstay 450mm
cassette 11-32
front ring 54

With:
https://www.alpinetrek.co.uk/chain-length-calculator/
I got 118 links

With a phone app 128 links

this ought to be a better link

http://www.machinehead-software.co.uk/bike/chain_length/chainlengthcalc.html

also gives 59 whole links (118 links) or 59" for your parameters.

cheers

Thanks that link worked it got me 118 links.
I think there should be a 9 speed available at 118. I'll go for 118.

Much appreciated.

FWIW the 'exact' (fixed gear) length would be 57.1", i.e. the chain is only 0.1" longer than would trigger the software to suggest 116 links rather than 118. It is therefore possible that 116 links will work OK, just. IIRC a friend's moulton uses 116 links, but they don't use a 32T sprocket.

Thanks Brucey.
I couldn't find 9 speed 118 link chains I was thinking they maybe more common because of MTBs but I was wrong.
I'm thinking can two chains be linked together with two quick links?
Also the chain set has a dished 54t 130 bcd chain ring I have not seen any replacement rings that are dished I was wondering why it would be dished?
Sturmey Archer FCSS1 Crankset w/ Chainguard - Silver - 170mm - 54T
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chainsets/s ... 170mm-54t/

I may in the end just put on an 11-28 that gets rid of the longer chain issue which is annoying.
I do have a 130 bcd Brompton 54T Chainring And Guard - Spider Type Silver new from before my Brompton was stolen.

Thanks.

as I mentioned a 116L chain may just work; I'd certainly try that ( on the workstand) using a 32 sprocket if you can, after all what have you got to lose?

A while back I suggested to my chum that they might like to stock up on KMC X9-73 chains because Halfords were doing them for less than ten quid each in 116L format.

Not sure about chainring dishing; chainline is important of course (which can always be adjusted using a different BB) but on some bikes the chainset hits the frame too easily before the chainline is correct.

Very true nothing to lose.
Chain set doesn't hit the frame with the original bb.
There are two chain guards and the dish goes towards the outer guard.

presumably the inner guard just keeps the chain on; I wonder if some other arrangement might work as well for that?

I'll photograph it tomorrow.
I would have thought a flat chain ring.would work perhaps the dish is there as it needs to push the chain line even further out?

I would suggest that you check the chainline; it often isn't quite what it should be, so you could either compound an error or make it better by changing it slightly....?

I assume that the note refers to 'CG' for chainguard version with chainguard inside and outside
