Campagnolo allan keys?

Post by bigjim »

I've got a bike with an old Campag 1" stem. The centre bolt has the usual Allen key fit. None of my Allen keys will fit it and the largest in my set is a 6 which is too small. Before I go buying one I need to make sure it is the right size. 7,8 9? does anybody know the correct size?
Cheers.

I think you may need a 7mm key. IIRC this was included in one of the most popular campag tools BITD.

You should be able to tell the difference between 7 and 8mm even using something as simple as a ruler.

If you can post a photo of the part someone may recognise it exactly.

cheers

I seem to recall that 7mm is an unusual size so
may not be included in sets as a rule. Doubtless easy enough to get one

I'd be interested in a picture because i've never seen a Campag handlebar stem and can find no information on places like Velobase. The only one I can think of is part of the 50th anniversary groupset, but that was a pantographed Cinelli.

My Cinelli 1R stem is 6mm bolt head.
I doubt it's Cinelli therefore.

I have come across French stems (and seatpost clamps) that take a 7 mm Allen key. God only knows why 6 mm or 8 mm wasn’t good enough for their designers.

I think the self-extracting crank bolts on classic C-Record chainsets were a 7mm allen key too. Although I'd have to check.
Big wheels good, small wheels better.
Two saddles best!

I have a hazy memory that BITD you could fit a classic cinelli stem (eg a 1A model) with an aftermarket lightweight ergal expander bolt assembly, and that this may take a 7mm allen key instead of the usual 6mm one. For example this

might be one such? Could it be one of those?

Yes, we have a C Record and Chorus chainsets that need a 7mm key. I purchased a set of Teng allen keys that have a 7mm.

Don't even mention the 3 1/2 mm key needed for Campag Delta brakes!
