Servicing a 2nd hand Triban 500SE

Hi folks, all good?

I can feel some minor vibration along with some noise when spinning freely the front wheel, same goes to the back wheel. There's no play or any kind of wobbliness in them. So perhaps this is a good sign it needs just lubrication?

The bike is composed of microshift shifters, microshift front mech and claris rear mech. The cassette it's a Shimano CS-HG50 8 speeds which was put in place recently along with a claris groupset, chain and all cables by the previous owner. The bike is 5 years old.

My main concern and focus now is to service front hub, and the freehub. But I have no idea if they are serviceable or not, and I can not find much stuff around it, follows bellow some pics of them. I would not like to get a new set of wheels right now.

What I'd like to do, if possible, is to service the front hub and do the same to the freehub. It's also fine to replace the freehub if the current one is not serviceable. In this case, any suggestions of a new freehub which does not cost an arm but that I will be able to service it without major problems in the future?

Have you got some cone spanners to take the front hub apart ? and have you got the freehub removal tool and chain whip you will need to get the cassette off the rear hub .. ?

I'd suggest you get a cyclists toolkit like the one from Halfords here.

Which should have most of the specialist tools you will need for a modern bike .

Other sets are available wiggle is more expensive at £50 and Aldi is cheaper but dosen't have cone spanners

Hi, yes I have, it's on it's way and I should be getting it tomorrow. I also purchased the freehub tool to be used with the cassette, I should get it by 10PM today.

@zenitb thanks! I've watched pleeeeenty of videos of how to and I'm feeling confident in doing the front wheel, the cone spanners should be arriving in the next few minutes.

One bad news, the spokes are rusty therefore can't be adjusted any more. There are some loose in the back wheel which when I'm cycling resting my weight on the saddle they make noise. I will apply a drop of wd40 in each nipple to see if it helps.

Yeah, left the wd40 overnight and nothing, nipple and spoke moving together still. I'm gonna order some of this stuff. Thanks!

Just broke a spoke. Did not work.

Well, I've opened up the freehub but I could not take it from the wheel as it needs a 12mm allen key, and the biggest I have is 10mm. I should sort this out tomorrow but now I have mixed feeling about going through servicing it properly or just getting a new wheel. My guts say service it cause that's what you like to do (does not seem serviceable) but I really don't know. Or at least get a new freehub + axle.




I'm wondering how the axle got the middle of ir scraped off, and seems pretty new looks shiny! Can my body weight cause that having in mind the poor visible condition of the cups of the hub to a point it would bend the axel to grind it off somewhere?


On one the side of the Freehub there were 8 bearings, the other side 9

So it's a 100% sure new freehub, and a new cup to the other side?

Hi James, that is what I'm looking into now. It's a good idea so I will have time to DIY the wheels before winter.

But seems my 250GBP budget is not enough in most cases. Where should I search for it? I know eBay, Amazon, Evans and Halfords. Any other website to suggest?

Hi! I've checked them and I'm reading about! Most probably I will have to attain myself to eBay as I want to facilitate the payment through PP, I was not counting with the expense of a whole set.
