New tyres

Postby Sue Stone » 18 Sep 2020, 8:20am

I have an old 1950’s BSA drop handle bike that needs new tyres.
They are 26 x 1.25 - 32-594.
I cant find any anywhere.
Its a long story but I just want to get it roadworthy then sell for £50.
Drop handle, road bike, but unfortunately the previous owner painted it pink!
Thanks
Sue

Are you sure about that tyre size? 594 is not a "26 inch" size I recognise, but I could be wrong. It's not listed here though...

I wondered that, too. SJS cycles list 590 and 597, two widely used sizes in that era.

See also the Cycling UK guide (based on CJ's much earlier CTC web-page) - 590 and 597, but no 594.

Not in Sheldon Brown's tables either:

By the time youve bought 2 tyres you wont get a lot of change for £50, why not just sell it as is and let the next owner decide whats best.

Are you sure they're not 26x1 1/4, 32-597?

That would be my first guess based on the age and type of bike; this was the most common size in bikes of this sort at that time.

If so there's good news, bad news and more good news.

Good news; you can still buy tyres in this size.
Bad news; there is a very limited choice in these tyres. For example SJS currently have one tyre only in this size.
Good news; it is a pretty decent tyre, not too expensive and they have lots of them.
