Axle conversion

Post by andrewwillans49 »

Has anyone carried out 12mm thro axle to 9mm quick release? Reason for asking is Genesis Croix de fer 853 thro axle frameset is£900 and Genesis croix de fer 725 with 9mm drop outs£500. I have seen conversion axle kits available for £15 but am hesitant as safety is paramount

Really simple answer: it depends on what wheels you use.

Buy, for example, a pair of DT Swiss wheels and they will come with 'caps' that fit into the axle ends, so you fit whatever you want, 12mm thru-axle caps or 9mm QR caps. All DT Swiss disc wheels come with both the 12mm TA caps and the 9mm QR caps supplied - no extra cost.
I should coco.

I am not sure the OP is suggesting 9mm axles are unsafe. I think they are asking if the kits/methods used to convert a hub from one axle type to another are safe.
