Thorn puncture - any reason not to keep using the tyre?
An eventful ride yesterday - puncture and chain problem (see other post).
It is hedge cutting season and two on our ride managed to get punctures on an excursion along a bridle path.
Mine, in a Marathon, was more or less dead centre in the tread and straight through.
Pulled out and the inside examined and no obvious problems or bit s sticking through.
Tube replaced and away.
All very interesting as I can't remember the last time that I had a puncture.
I'm just checking if there is any reason not to just continue using the tyre as is.

Can you add a photo if you're concerned?
Sounds fine to me.

I once removed nine (yes, really) thorns from a tyre after an autumn ride around the Shropshire lanes. They often self- seal for a while at least.
They don't cause any problem once removed.

As long as the canvas inside isn't badly cut, I'd continue using it. If really paranoid and you can leave the tyre for a couple of days for it to cure, fill the hole with Stormsure.

I'm sure it will be fine. I've never known a thorn cause enough damage to worry about, though I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with a tale of disaster.
I did cut my finger once while detecting a thorn with that forceful brushing action though.

Can I ask what tyre size it is? If it's a 26" by 1.75" then it's a death trap and should be sent to me immediately for safe disposal. I'll waive any costs incurred of safely destroying it for you

I concur as those thorns can even perforate the rims if unchecked.
Re: Thorn puncture - any reason not to keep using the tyre?
Make sure the thorn is out. It is worth spending some time looking for it. But the tyre will be fine once you have done that.

Yikes! I didn't think a Marathon could be punctured by a thorn. I'm sure the tire is perfectly usable once you remove the thorn and put a new tube in.

You can patch tubes, you know.

Re: Thorn puncture - any reason not to keep using the tyre?
Yes, use after thorn puncture
BUT after puncture from shard of glass which probably will have damaged the threads in carcase
I usually, at home, stick a thin Cure-C-Cure type patch for local re-inforcement and biro mark the sidewall
to identify as an old scar for future when checking tyre for cuts/damage etc.
Finding the thorn or glass shard ??
Second savers!!
Always, if there is a badge on the tyre, put this central alongside the valve then when you have
found the puncture in the tube you have a good reference to locate the cause in the tyre.
Also if you do use dust caps-I don't, use white or yellow for quick valve location when dark.
How many spare tubes do you carry?
Me--three and self adhesive patch's.
Just in case you don't find the puncture culprit when changing tube.
And now, back up North, we are all back on segregated riding.
Perhaps its time to explore those little "No through Roads" we have passed and never had time to look at.

I had a 3mm diameter hedge trimming stalk through a tyre once. It was fine for another 400m before the bracing ruptured, but not so badly it couldn't wait until the next bike shop.
