When did Centre-pull brakes take over from Side-pull ?

I'm disagreeing with you when you say

'the brake centring is nothing to do with the spring'.

This is without doubt one of the daftest things I have heard in my life.

Therefore you are not thinking the same as me then.

If the spring has the centring issue, taking it off would make a difference ............. but it doesn't.
Try it.
I have, and brake still works fine.

There are two things about the spring.
One, and the main thing, it is there as a return spring.
Two, it has to be the same pull on both sides ........... and that is the issue here for centralisation.

If you can't get it, forget it.

Over and out.

this conversation is utterly pointless.

As I and others have repeatedly stated, brakes which are only centred by springs (such as SP calipers ) are prone to a variety of spring-related problems. Disconnecting the spring for ten seconds on a workstand and claiming "it works normally" is just another ridiculous diversion and will only serve to distract those who are not well-informed; I'm not minded to even discuss it, sorry.

In particular it distracts from the main point which is that DPs and SPs work very differently and have entirely different operational characteristics.
