Do helmets wear out ?

Post by prando »

Forgive the simplicity of the question. Given no accidents, bumps or serious scrapes, does the safety aspect of a helmet deteriorate with age ?

Mine (Giro transfer) is 10 years + old and still looks ok, having been worn for 3 hours twice a week. Clearly the internal padding showed signs of wear, but I have replaced (new adhesive foam strip) to maintain comfort.

No evidence of any other deterioration.
Original cost £40 ish.

Thanks

Yes, the plastic deteriorates. UV radiation can accelerate that.

There's a recent discussion starting with a helmet where it was obvious:

20+ years if you believe the man who designs helmets for Giro.....

Or 3, or 5, or 10 years...take your pick!

Thanks guys for the prompt response and interesting article. It’s seems better safe than sorry given the potential risk.
Off topic, but in case anyone reads on...Planet X sell helmets at considerably lower prices than more recognised brands. Is there any research as to their helmet quality vs others ?

Hi
I've owned three PX helmets, I still use the most recent two. Three different models and no problems
Fit is a bigger issue than quality because all helmets should be certified to minimum standards, regardless of make
The PX ones are well-finished and I can't see the difference between one of theirs and one at 5x the price, but if a helmet doesn't suit your head then it won't feel right. PX are good with returns if you don't like what you buy but factor in return postage
Regards
