This will revolutionise shifting... or not...

Rollers are great in various places, but I can't say I've ever really wanted the last turn of a derailleur cable to have a not insubstantial mass attached, ready to bounce in at the spokes...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

And solved more effectively 25 years ago by the Cog Hog. :?

Cog Hog did it first (and was moderately effective with Gripshift)

Wow! An accident waiting to happen.
Be interesting to see if they respond to my query ""Isn't this likely to flap about and jam in the spokes?" ...

A prompt response received thus :

"Thankyou for your enquiry. The Gizmo weighs only 34 grams and the outer gear cable is quite stiff so it does not flap around. It has been thoroughly tested and works well with nice crisp smooth gear changes.
Regards Simon Ogden"

Made all the difference on my tandem with a Shimano 7 speed setup.

Hi,
Shimano have used this idea on several of their derailleurs in the past.
The wheel / pulley is incorporated into the derailleur.
I have one on one of my bikes.
It removes the friction in the cable doing that last turn.
Not sure the last time shimano used it?

Cog Hog's slao worked well with v-brakes removing the noodle, better used on the rear to reduce the profile of the brake if heels wewre catching on the brake outer. IIRC you had to file the cog hog down a little for it to fit in the brake arm.

the ebay cable roller will be at least 2" from the spokes and the chances of it getting snarled up I would say are slight. Not my cup of tea ( I think dirt will get into the cable too easily) but at least it isn't going off at half-cock (half-cog...?). It always seemed to me that it was a bit daft having a 180 degree cable bend and bothering to have a roller (cog hog, rollamajig) that only did about half of it...? A 180 degree roller makes more sense.

The cable will also flex and fatigue around the roller, but this is no worse than the flexing that goes on in the shifter and near the pinch bolt.

cheers

I’ve fitted an avid rolla-majig to my cyclocross bike a few weeks after first building it up (11 speed Campag pre-2015). On my set up shifting is definitely smoother with the gizmo than without. On said cyclocross frame the rear mech cable is routed along the seat stay.
