semi fluid grease eg carlube 100+
Yes I know there's a great sticky on grease thanks to brucey, but a quick question on this.
Been thinking of getting some, but, hey, don't want to rush into these major purchases
or clutter myself with more stuff for the sake of it.
Can I ask what it's good for/recommended for on bikes?
This
https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/283564726508?c ... gIhq_D_BwE
says bicycle chains but have no need of anything different, or more pricey, for that.
From recent reading linked to my recent tinkering/messing stuff up I gather it's great for inside rapidfires and the like.
Anything else?

the carlube stuff is fine, (although I have had a couple of cans where the mechanics of the aerosol container seemed less good than normal; low pressure inside, and a tendency to jam open). Comma also make a semi-fluid aerosol grease which is OK too. My main reservation about these lubes is that per litre they work out quite pricey. Obviously this only matters if you are getting through the stuff.
FWIW I think it should be possible to make a DIY version of this type of lube with similar properties; when I get a spare moment or two I shall look into this.
cheers

Re: semi fluid grease eg carlube 100+
I bought some the the other day. I used it in some m780 shifters, no change in sound but it certainly reaches everywhere. It comes out as a heavy oil and after the bubbles disappear it settles into a fine sticky to the touch but at the same time slippery film layer. I used some in some XT jockey wheels where I'd used big standard comma lithium grease and the semi fluid grease thinned out the #2 grease so they spin more freely. In the XT jockey wheel I left one seal on and the semi fluid grease penetrated the seal on the other side. A little goes a long way.
Re: semi fluid grease eg carlube 100+
I've been using it for a while now. I reckon it's maybe a bit thin for hub and headset bearings but have used it on rapidfire shifters as it penetrates the mechanism well, and brake and gear cable outers, I also think it will work OK in freehub bodies as the typical No. 2 grease is a bit sticky and tends to stick the pawls slightly in colder weather. Also SPD pedal release mechanisms. Not tried it on a chain yet but would be worth a go I think, although it's sticky and will probably attract dirt badly.
It's useful for a million other things though, e.g. car door/boot hinges, lubricating house/car door locks and padlocks, door hinges, tools and tool bearings/pivots, lubricating motor bearings, as a basic cutting fluid, a quick squirt to help stop rust/displace water, etc, etc. I'd definitely recommend getting some.

BTW one of its many uses is to keep unsealed pedal bearings happy. However much as noted above, it has countless applications.

I have a can of that, I don't know how it compares to any others, but it has the advantage of being available from Halfords.
It's likely to outlast me, very useful when needed, but for me that isn't very often.

Would it be too sticky for freehub pawls?

Is this the halfords comma equivalent referred to up above by several folks?

That's the one I have, though I'm not speaking for anyone else!
Re: semi fluid grease eg carlube 100+
Comma only list two aerosol greases on their website; SG500M and WGR500M. It definitely isn't the latter, which is a sticky white grease.
data for the former;
https://www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehicles/products/view/215
(the above is meant to be a 'technical document'; it is about the least technical document I have ever seen.)

MSDS
Neither which mentions the magic words 'semi-fluid consistency'. However this was mentioned on the back of the can, last time I looked.

Re: semi fluid grease eg carlube 100+
I use the Halfords spray grease all over my bikes.
Particularly on my winter bike.
It lasts perhaps 2-3 rides??
Summer bikes I use a lighter oil on the drivetrain.
Cheers James

I think it would be fine tbh.
Proper grease would last longer though, if your going to the hassle of taking the freehub apart.

From the tin, the former you approve of looks like the Halfords one Brucey.
Anything too/much technical probably beyond me, but it does say:
"Sprays water thin to run into all moving parts"
which is at my kind of level.
It also says shelf life of 3 years which might be an issue considering how fast I will use it.
Fair to assume that it will be just fine and dandy for far longer?

£6.99 seems expensive, I know it's a few years ago but I bought a tin of auto care spray grease from tesco for under £2 - 400ml tin.
There's loads out there to choose from.
Holts do one, here for £3.79/500ml, however only free postage with orders over £15 but 4 cans for £15.16 delivered seems pretty good if you want a job lot https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/p/holts ... TtEALw_wcB here for a single 500ml can for £5.99 delivered https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Holts-Spray- ... SwRn5dMJ0-
Or maybe you can collect direct from Eurocar parts for £4.09 https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/holts-sp ... pKEALw_wcB
400ml PTFE https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-m ... rvEALw_wcB
As for use, freewheel sprockets have been my favoured use, always seems to work a treat, also the splines on a freehub body, sticky STI units post cleaning as mentioned previously, generally places that might be impossible or really difficult to reach with appropriate blob of solid grease without fully dismantling or really fiddly.
Only on a cheap pair of pedals would I use it, decent ones you might as well dismantle and go the whole hog of cleaning out, adjusting and relubing properly.
