11-40 cassette and extension gear hanger have done the trick. Works across both chainrings apart from 50-40 but I never use big-big on any bike.

Not many people do, intentionally. However if you have a setup where the chain is not long enough to run big-big, you can find out that you do occasionally select that gear accidentally. If you do this, the chances are excellent that you will be walking home and then buying half a new bike; the resulting carnage can be spectacular.

My suggestion is that you should fit a longer chain; if the chain runs slack in small-small, so be it; you shouldn't be using those gears either and it is far less likely to break the bike.

FWIW a 110mm BCD chainset will usually take a 33T chainring. TA make 'em.
