Anyone able to recommend a good wheel builder, Surrey area?

Post by GideonReade »

Hi, an embarrassing accident while not riding - demolished front wheel on Whyte MBT. Not many miles, so hub should be fine. Will need new rim & spokes.

Is anyone able to suggest a good wheel builder in Surrey or Sussex or hereabouts?

Bike spec here, if relevant. It's a 29er, disked, MTB. https://whyte.bike/products/629

Yourself?

The front is really easy to rebuild.

You need to measure the diameter across the rim and add 4mm

Then find a rim that measures that distance. . .

You can either tape the rims together and loosely transfer the rims across

Or do it using a YouTube or website tutorial.

It will be a two / three Cross wheel as it's a disk wheel.

Otherwise a old fashioned bike shop should sort look for one with with a good reputation and service values.

Cheers James

Cheers. If you don't mind I'll pass on the offer, as it's actually a friend's bike (and accident), and I am reluctant to create a longer communication chain.

Yes, he’s great isn’t he. I miss the days when his touring wheels were regularly reviewed in Cycling Plus and normally won in the end of year awards too.

Ace Bicycles Guildford used to be Guildford Branch of Cycleworks. I've had maybe 6 wheels built there over past decade, none have failed or had to be returned for truing.
