Cannon m500 replacement front dérailleurs

Post by ddemolder »

I need to replace the front dérailleur on my Cannondale M500. Any suggestions for an alternative to the original (or where to get hold of an original) ? Thanks

Do you know if it is actually unserviceable? I ask because at the angle it is positioned in those photos it will be pretty useless even if it did move efficiently.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

For assistance on a front mech replacement option it will be helpful to know the number of teeth on the outer and middle rings of that chainset, plus details of the existing shifter that the mech is paired with. My experience with triple front mechs is limited but with that information I’m sure somebody will be able to help you.

Try as per peetee. The mech is mounted crocked, then outer cage plate should be parallel to the outer chainring teeth. Put on small ring (so slack cable tension) before repositioning.
Once mounted straight, check adjustment/cable tension and adjust as necc..

The mech says Sachs on the plastic. If your lever is indexed, there might be compatability issues (or not?). The original Sachs rear mechs were not Shimano compatable as regards indexing. They date from the 1990's, so from a long time ago memorywise
If the lever is non indexed, then you will have a wider choice of mechs should you need one.

Thanks Peetee. It has been moved so I can use the bike on the smallest cog. Some of it is corroded.

You can often free them up if they've gone stiff by soaking the pivots in oil or penetrating fluid and then repeatedly working the cage back and forth, either by hand or by using an Allen key in the cable clamp bolt as a lever.
