I had a chain that sounded ill for months and finally failed (jamming in the rear mech) at the end of my road after a ride. The Shimano special pin had worked its way out.

I have to ask why on earth did you ride for months with a chain that sounded ill? :)

I thought it was a bent rear mech or a chainline issue! The chain looked ok but shifting was awful and it wasn't possible to get the indexing just right. A new chain (not Shimano) fixed all that, as well as the broken link. It was a strange one.

I’ve got an older chain than that on one of my tourers - 23 years - sees dry miles only.

At the current rate of use and expected life span of 5000 miles, the chain on my Eroica bike will still be okay in 2243! Its done i think 110 miles since it was fitted in 2016 - the hundred being the Eroica event. Maybe i should get out on that bike a bit more!
Convention? what's that then?
