How much does hydraulic cable matter?

Post by boxrick »

I am moving my Gravel bike components from one from to another, its same model of bike just a better frame.

As part of this move I would like to purchase new cables and the 'official' cable to use for this is the following pack:

https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/ ... K-SSR.html

However it is out of stock everywhere, and even then its around 5x the price when compared to the below kit. I already have spare olives and barbs and I suspect I can re-use some bits from my old cables?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08DFSCV2T

So simply put, will I lose anything by purchasing the above kit, or would I be better to track down all the official stuff if its going to be better I am happy to spend the extra money / wait.

I'd say not, but maybe find a more reputable seller. The two Shimano hose types are interchangeable, but you have to be careful to use the correct barb and olive for the hose. It's a pretty basic and crude function, using an olive to make the seal, if it doesn't work you can see so straight away from the leakage.

That's a product manufactured in China and probably sold/shipped from China. Quality unknown, but probably not as good as Shimano even though the latter will have a bigger price markup. It's compatible with your brakes in theory. If it was me I'd try it and have a look at the construction, the Kevlar braiding etc when cutting it, and keep a good regular eye on it in use. You can't tell by looking what materials they've used/manufacturing tolerances/quality of construction and quality control etc. BH59 and BH90 are 5mm diameter, they use identical olives, just the barb is different to fit the different internal diameters. I'm not sure but I presume that less pressure and therefore brake power is lost by BH90 by the use of thicker walls.

I would have thought that any genuine Shimano BH90 hose would do as olives and barbs come with the kit, any additional fittings specific to your components you have already. This is Shimano and seems to be in stock. It's a legitimate site.

Cheers for the responses :)

This isn't the 'JK', kit so comes with different end fittings. I guess I can just pinch all the ones from my existing kit and just use the cable from this kit.

I have spare BH90 olives and barbs as required anyway.
